banana fibre & organic cotton. hybric eco-blend
Commercial high-volume hybrid eco-blend fabric using 30% recycled farm waste from the inner pseudo stem of a banana plant and blending with 70% GOTS organic cotton with full traceability along the entire supply chain - see below.
The banana stem has a unique physical and chemical characteristic that holds the potential to make fine quality fibre, especially from the silky soft inner layer of the pseudo stem. It is light weight, highly strong, very long fibres with low elongation and has good moisture absorption and release characteristics.
Through indepth development research, our makers have created a commercial scale manufacturing process that offers better fineness and spin-ability in the production of extraction and conversion to yarn and fabric.
When blended with their GOTS organic cotton, the banana yarn and fabric has a similar feel and texture to linen. However, by using the banana plant waste-by-product, the fabric’s water consumption is lower given it was originally grown for food, as opposed to flax crops grown specifically to produce linen.
In addition, the growth of banana crops for both food and apparel fabric, reduces the demand to bringing more acreage under cotton farming, which is know to be highly water consumptive crops.
The banana fibres are also bio degradable with no negative effects on the environment.
Banana blends are perfect for products used closed to the skin such as active wear, t-shirts, undergarments, baby clothes and wraps plus bed linen and pillow covers.
The fabrics are certified Fair Trade, plus GOTS (Global Organic Textile System), BCI (Better Cotton Initiative), Global Recycle Standard and the Textile Exchange.
Our Mill also employs the latest in Traceability Signature Software by German company Tailorlux. See the slides below to learn about the full transparency system in place.
